4:09PM – Webmail is now working again.
3:52PM – Webmail will be unavailable temporarily.
This occurs due to the use of multiple protocols to access the same mailbox. In this case the mailbox is being accessed by both POP3 and IMAP:
Jul 10 15:17:36 mail2 pop3d[1994]: LOGIN, user=mckinnon, ip=[::ffff:163.182.233.245], port=[52326] Jul 10 15:17:41 mail2 pop3d[1994]: LOGOUT, user=mckinnon, ip=[::ffff:163.182.233.245], port=[52326], top=0, retr=0, rcvd=18, sent=1390, time=5, stls=1 Jul 10 14:45:33 mail1 roundcube: Successful login for mckinnon@hay.net (ID: 22) from 163.182.253.90 in session 9510494ccaec0e774e7b1b3bf69af099
The POP3 protocol was really only designed to access a single INBOX from a single client. It might experience anomalies like this related to handling of messages states. When multiple mailboxes are used (such as is the case
here) the account must be accessed only via IMAP from all devices.
That was ClearCable’s explanation.
Sent this out via Twitter / hay.net:
Mail VM servers are moving to new VMs tonight in the AM. We’ve found some users using POP3 may re-download a bunch of e-mail.
This is a side effect of moving services and POP3 and customers will have to delete any unwanted messages.
IMAP is recommended when setting up any users with email however, some users will insist on POP3.
If POP3 users have messages left on the server, they are likely to re-download. These customers likely do not have their client set to remove from the server after a certain time, or they may just have a bunch of e-mail from the past sitting in there for some reason.
